Talking about Being Funny

Learning to be funny is no joke! What an irony.

I'm actually thinking of writing about teaching you how to be an adorable goofball (a funny person). But now that I'm starting to type the words, it's almost not coming to me. So we all know it, being a comedian is a magical skill that not everyone is born with. Sigh, sigh, I know.

Comedians are like superstars. They are adored with sparkling eyes. Everybody loves a comedian. Women especially love funny guys. If you're a little short on the physique department, then here's your chance to shine. So, I don't really blame you if you want to taste a little of that fame and attention.

But how do you become a certified Mr. Funny Guy?

A bank of jokes which you have to consistently memorize and deliver and renew and improvise may not be always enough for you to fire.

To help you put on that funny hat, you could also try to:

Be unpredictable. People find it funny when the twist is unexpected or a surprise. If they know what's coming, the joke's desiccated. If you tell them a joke that's way too over used, don't ask why they start throwing tomatoes at you.

Make yourself the joke. It doesn't hurt to have everybody laugh at yourself once in awhile. Open your eyes and ears to your life experiences. Look for stupid, embarrassing, funny, absurd experiences you have and tell your audience about it. You can even convert not-so-funny incidents to humorous ones by exaggerating it to make it more enjoyable.

Don't laugh before the punch line. Duh. Whoever does this is killing the humor just before he delivers it.

Make your jokes relevant. Try to crack a joke that's totally not related to the topic and let's see how far you'd go.

Understand that timing is important. The place and time are important things you must take into account when you deliver a joke. Try to be funny at a serious gathering and people will stare at you sharply.

I have always tried to work humor my way year after year and the latest progress after aging so much at it is, tadahhh - none. I'm still trying. Sigh again. So, nobody said it was easy but I'm not giving up yet.

While at it, I did have a lot of ah-ha moments and I am not the same person I am 10 years back (very boring in fact that I wouldn't want to talk to me). But to muster the craft is total hard work if you weren't born with the talent. But then again, maybe I could take up comedy classes later when I get my weekends free. Now, that's a thought.

"So, why are we doing this?" again, you ask. The world needs to laugh. You need to loosen up a bit and become more easygoing, approachable and sociable. And they say that anyone can be funny. If you are anyone, come on and let's give it a try.

Interesting. I am not sure humour can be "learned" . Some people have a knack of being funny but humour is generally quite real, biting and often true. It is the uncomfortable closeness to pain and reality that makes us laugh (nervously I might add).

After Air crashes, political faux pax, natural disasters, the jokes come thick and fast. What is the difference between Mugabe and the South African Olympic team? Mugabe has more medals!

Also witty is good, the ability to twist words, make puns and see the funny side of a situation quickly.

Good hub.

A good hub, I partially agree with Sixtyorso, but if you have the easy raconteur and can pull a couple of good accents without falling flat, you can be the life and sole of a crowded room, but do not only have a stock of a half a dozen, by now tired jokes.

Laugh at yourself is the best way to learn to be funny.

The best ........... jokes, are told by the ............ . A sad truism. Fill in the dotted lines to cover the target market.

@ marisue.. yes what would this world be like without humour?.. the ability to laugh at life is what keeps us sane.. i feel.. even in the most negative situations laughter is the only thing that can make us see the lighter side of things and not take ourselves too seriously thx for the comment :)

@sixtyorso no to be humourous i think is a gift.. but we definately can learn to laugh at life and not take things to heart .. we can also learn how to find humour in almost any situation.. makes dealing with life a lil easier cheers :)

@Just_Rodney hey havent we all been in that position after one too many?.. haha.. i came across a funny joke site tonight.. which was titled The Best Batman Jokes told by The Joker.. which i thought were a lil lame but they did crack me up.. i did say they were lame.. ?? thx for the comment..

I agree whole-heartedly about adding humor to our lives. I love people that can make me laugh out loud and not much makes me happier than to return the favor. I do think spontaneous humor is a gift, but you can definitely use your tips to improve what you got! Good hub and a thumbs up from me.

I was thrown off a little by the links you added because I expected them to be funny..........possibly you need to work on timing? :)

Nice hub. maybe we can get together and talk about being funny and cybersexing. Laughter usually follows when I both tell a joke and have sex so I think it would be a perfect fit.
